Tryptophan helps the body to produce more serotonin. 

Serotonin is a chemical in the brain, blood, intestines and connective tissue that causes blood vessels to contract, help transmit information across the nervous system and has a role in brain function.

Because serotonin has such an effect on the body and the brain, a lack of serotonin in the body can lead to some unpleasant symptoms.
